Key facts about educational activities

  • 9 634 pupils visited the two sites in 2017
  • 474 primary and secondary school teachers attended initial or further training courses
  • 1 014 visitors welcomed as part of social outreach programmes

The Archives Nationales education service runs over 50 teaching workshops and educational visits to discover different historical periods based on studying original documents.
These educational activities are available on both sites and their themes follow those of the record groups conserved at each:

  • the activities at the Pierrefitte-sur-Seine site are based on public archive groups since 1790 and records from private sources.
  • the workshops run by the education service at the Paris site relate to record groups from the Ancien Régime;

Workshops are run for all school and university publics
All of the activities follow a similar format irrespective of theme. The pupils or students visiting the Archives Nationales in Paris or Pierrefitte-sur-Seine bar are first introduced to the documents that are part of the national heritage and the various functions carried out by the archives (collecting, conserving, providing access to, and making optimal use of the documents). A workshop or exhibition then builds on this to reinforce knowledge and skills on a chosen theme. Depending upon the exact nature of the activities, the class then redeploys these skills by producing a piece of artistic or technical work or giving an oral summary.
Time is set aside during each workshop to discover the original documents in the showcases or the temporary exhibition areas.

Special services for teachers
The Archives Nationales education service supports teachers working on core skills.
It helps teachers with their teaching projects in various disciplines (history, literature, science, modern languages, and art). It adjusts its activities to the level and progress of the classes, in line with the national curriculum.
Several visits and activities are particularly adapted for artistic and cultural education and practical interdisciplinary teaching.
These multimedia spaces for school publics are a way to include information and communication technologies in teaching activities. Specific workshops count towards the IT and internet school certificate (brevet informatique et Internet).
