Strategy 2021-2025

Cultural, Educational, and Scientific Project 2017-2020 (PSCE)

2017-2020, the second Archives Nationales Projet Scientifique Culturel et Éducatif
Three years after the opening of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, and the profound modernisation that went with it, the Archives Nationales continue to implement their regulatory missions in a second four-year programme of action: the Projet Scientifique Culturel et Éducatif (PSCE, Cultural and Educational Scientific Project).

The challenge over the next four years will be to give a new impetus to the Archives Nationales, to be located at the end of this period at the two sites in Paris and Pierrefitte, following the decision by the Minister of Culture on 28 June 2016 to close the Fontainebleau site, also at the end of this period.

The purpose of the PSCE is to strengthen the Archives Nationales, both in its role as a scientific research institution based on its archival heritage, and as an institution of cultural mediation able to inform the youngest and most disadvantaged audiences about citizenship. This new programme is also designed to establish the Archives Nationales firmly in the digital and digital humanities spheres, through the ADAMANT inter-ministerial electronic archiving project. Digital technology will make it possible to rethink the uses made of the archives as part of a participative approach with the involvement of the public.

The objective is to improve the relevance of the various tools and media, whether used for the online catalogue, educational activities or exhibitions. This will be achieved by suggesting, with more pertinence and ease, the best pathways to knowledge based on the riches of the paper and digital heritage of the Archives Nationales, to each and every reader in our rooms, internet user, student, contributor and return user.
Finally, the PSCE is designed with and for the partners of the Archives Nationales: universities and research centres, genealogists and, more generally, the various users of the institution.

2013-2016 The first Archives Nationales Projet Scientifique Culturel et Éducatif
The first Projet Scientifique Culturel et Éducatif (PSCE, Cultural and Educational Scientific Project) (2013-2016) was one of the pillars of the modernisation of the Archives Nationales, in addition to the opening of the new Pierrefitte-sur-Seine building and the initiation of major computer projects (the archival information system and online catalogue). The aim was to focus the institution's initiatives towards developing the range of services offered to the public, particularly with digital services (online catalogue, social networks) but also with new audiences in the area where the institution is located (users from Plaine-Commune, with its official status as a Culture and Creation zone, and from the wider catchment of Seine-Saint-Denis and its surroundings). It also put the spotlight on the flagship electronic archiving project.

At the present time, the PSCE is understood primarily as a broad approach to the organisation of internal activities and the rolling out of the project mode. At the same time, in terms of external relations, by linking the potential of our collections with current fields of research in the humanities and social sciences, the PSCE has become an effective scientific communication tool that has broadened and structured our partnerships with the academic world and led to innovative actions.
